The kitchen is the most utilized room in the house and the top place for friends and family to gather, so it is important for it to be functional for both everyday living and entertaining. When designing a custom kitchen, there are a few things you may not be thinking about. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when building your next home:

Traffic Flow

Be conscious of your daily routine and place items that be easily accessed. The three main working areas, the sink, refrigerator, and stove should form what is known as a working triangle to create an ideal rotational movement between tasks. To ensure an efficient and comfortable working space with no interruption in the flow, each side of the triangle should measure no less than four feet and no more than nine feet.

Islands

Determine the island's function. Think about how you'd like to use the island within the space before you consider the design. Do you want it to house the sink or dishwasher for added functionality, or keep it clear for large family gatherings? Design a kitchen layout with ample walking space on all sides of the island. Allow for enough space to open the dishwasher, refrigerator, or oven and still have plenty of space to walk around the island comfortably.

Special Cabinet Features

Consider adding special cabinet features such as silverware and utensil dividers, pull out spice organizers, and larger drawers to your kitchen cabinet design to create storage solutions that are both functional and beautiful. Pull out garbage and recycling cabinets allow for easy cleanup when cooking and doing dishes. It also hides the unsightly garbage can, allowing for a seamless kitchen design. Silverware and utensil dividers, plus pull-out spice organizers or spice racks on the door can also hide extra unwanted clutter on your kitchen countertops. Larger drawers are also much more practical and provide a better storage solution than traditional cabinets.

Lighting

Of course, you need light to illuminate the area you are working in, but pendant lighting can also be a statement piece in your kitchen design. Island pendant lights provide task lighting. LEDs or fluorescent lights are a popular choice for under cabinet lighting in kitchens. Under cabinet lights help give your kitchen a more modern look and feel. Illuminating your countertops not only makes them look great, but also allows you to see better as you prep food for cooking.

There are many sizes, finishes, and shapes to choose from when it comes to light fixtures for your kitchen. Take the time to find the right fixture for your space and don’t be afraid to ask one of our knowledgeable designers for help when choosing the right one for your space.

Electrical Outlets

While some light fixtures are more of a design feature in your kitchen, electrical outlets provide a more practical purpose. Ensure your kitchen includes plenty of electrical outlets in areas where you plan to use a coffee pot, toaster, blender, and other countertop appliances. You may even consider adding a countertop and outlets in your pantry to store some of these items and keep your kitchen countertops looking tidy.

Backsplash

If you are designing a new home, one of the easiest things to incorporate into your kitchen is a tile backsplash. Adding a backsplash to your kitchen is a great way to add color and personality to a room. It will create a balance between different design elements, and create an interesting focal point within the space.
